Peter Obi Reacts to Port Harcourt Refinery's Production Resumption

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has commended the recent resumption of production at the Port Harcourt Refinery, while raising critical concerns about transparency and sustainability. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced that the refinery now produces 1.4 million liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) daily, a milestone in reducing Nigeria's dependence on imported fuel.

Obi acknowledged the potential economic benefits of having functional refineries but emphasized the need for comprehensive accountability in managing the facility. According to him, the revival of Nigeria's refineries is long overdue, and every effort must be made to ensure this achievement translates into tangible benefits for citizens, such as stable fuel prices and improved energy access.

He expressed concern about the sustainability of the refinery's operations, particularly in light of Nigeria's history of underutilized infrastructure and project mismanagement. Obi called for an independent monitoring framework to oversee the refinery's rehabilitation progress and ensure its long-term viability.

The politician also highlighted the broader implications of functional refineries for Nigeria's economy. He noted that achieving self-sufficiency in fuel production would ease pressure on foreign exchange reserves, create jobs, and foster economic growth. However, he stressed that this vision could only be realized through systemic reforms and strategic investment in the oil and gas sector.

Obi's reaction adds to the ongoing discourse about Nigeria's energy future. His call for transparency and efficiency resonates with the aspirations of many Nigerians who hope that the refinery's revival will mark a turning point for the nation's energy independence.
