NNPCL Refutes Claims of Port Harcourt Refinery Operating as Blending Plant

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has denied recent reports suggesting that the rehabilitated Port Harcourt Refinery functions merely as a blending plant rather than a full-fledged refining facility. The clarification aims to dispel public misconceptions surrounding the refinery's operations and its role in Nigeria's energy sector.

NNPCL emphasized that the refinery is currently refining crude oil to produce Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and other petroleum products, with an output of 1.4 million liters of PMS daily. This output, while limited, is part of an ongoing phased rehabilitation process designed to restore the refinery to full capacity.

The controversy arose after some industry stakeholders questioned the technical processes being employed at the refinery. Critics argued that the facility might only be blending imported fuel components rather than refining crude oil, sparking widespread debates on the transparency and efficacy of the rehabilitation project.

NNPCL has assured Nigerians that the refinery is undergoing extensive upgrades to ensure it meets global refining standards. The organization also highlighted that the ongoing work aligns with its commitment to reducing dependency on imported fuel and achieving energy self-sufficiency in Nigeria.

This clarification underscores the importance of transparent communication in managing public expectations about major infrastructure projects. As the Port Harcourt Refinery moves closer to full rehabilitation, its performance will be a critical benchmark for the success of Nigeria's efforts to revitalize its refining industry.
