Nigeria's Crude Oil Production Drops to 1.53 Million BPD in October – NUPRC

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has reported a decline in the country's crude oil production, which fell to 1.53 million barrels per day (BPD) in October 2024. This figure represents a slight reduction compared to September's output of 1.55 million BPD, raising concerns about the nation's ability to meet its OPEC quota.
The decline has been attributed to a combination of factors, including oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and operational inefficiencies in the upstream sector. Despite ongoing efforts by the government and industry stakeholders to curb these issues, the challenges persist, significantly affecting revenue generation and foreign exchange earnings.

Analysts have warned that the reduced production levels could further strain Nigeria's economy, given its heavy reliance on oil revenue. The situation underscores the need for urgent reforms, including enhanced security for oil infrastructure, adoption of advanced monitoring technologies, and improved collaboration between the government and private operators.
The NUPRC has reiterated its commitment to addressing these challenges, outlining plans to deploy new security measures and incentivize investment in exploration and production. Stakeholders have also called for greater transparency and accountability in the management of the oil sector to restore investor confidence.
With global oil prices fluctuating, Nigeria's declining production poses a significant risk to its fiscal stability. Experts believe that addressing the root causes of the decline is critical for the country to maximize its hydrocarbon resources and achieve sustainable economic growth.
