Cooking Gas Prices Continue to Rise Across Nigeria

The cost of refilling cooking gas cylinders has risen significantly in recent months, with a new report highlighting the three most expensive states for gas purchases in Nigeria. According to the findings, Lagos, Rivers, and Abuja are leading the list of states where consumers pay the highest prices for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), placing an increased burden on households and businesses.
The price hike is attributed to several factors, including Nigeria's reliance on imported LPG, fluctuations in international gas prices, and logistical challenges in distribution. Experts also cite the lack of local production capacity and the high cost of transportation as critical contributors to the persistent rise in gas prices. These challenges continue to undermine the government's efforts to promote cleaner energy alternatives like LPG.

Consumers in Lagos now pay an average of ₦12,500 to refill a 12.5kg cylinder, while prices in Rivers and Abuja hover around similar figures. Smaller cylinder refills, such as the 5kg, have also experienced significant price increases, making clean cooking energy less accessible to low-income families. Many Nigerians are being forced to revert to traditional cooking methods, which pose health risks and environmental concerns.
Industry stakeholders have called on the government to address these issues by increasing local LPG production and improving infrastructure for distribution. Policy measures such as tax reliefs for gas importers and subsidies for consumers have also been suggested to stabilize prices and enhance affordability.
For end-users, the rising cost of cooking gas underscores the need for urgent interventions to prevent a rollback in the adoption of clean energy solutions. Addressing these systemic challenges will be critical to achieving Nigeria's energy transition goals and ensuring sustainable development.
