CNG Vehicles Unsafe for Nigeria's Environment, Elebute Warns

A transportation expert, Mr. Elebute, has voiced concerns over the safety of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles in Nigeria, describing them as unsuitable for the country's environment. In a recent statement, Elebute highlighted the risks associated with CNG technology, particularly in a country with inadequate infrastructure and lax enforcement of safety regulations. His remarks come amidst growing advocacy for CNG adoption as a cleaner and cost-effective alternative to traditional fuels.
Elebute emphasized that while CNG vehicles offer environmental benefits, their operation requires stringent safety protocols and regular maintenance, which are often overlooked in Nigeria. He cited the absence of sufficient refueling stations, poor road conditions, and lack of skilled technicians as key factors that heighten the risks of using CNG-powered vehicles. These challenges, he warned, could lead to frequent accidents and safety breaches if not addressed.
The expert also raised concerns about the quality of CNG equipment available in the Nigerian market. Many operators, he noted, procure substandard conversion kits and cylinders due to cost constraints, further compromising safety. Without proper regulatory oversight and quality control measures, the likelihood of explosions or gas leaks increases significantly, posing a threat to both users and the general public.

Despite his warnings, Elebute acknowledged the potential of CNG as a sustainable energy source for transportation in Nigeria. However, he urged the government to prioritize safety by investing in infrastructure, training technicians, and enforcing compliance with global standards. Public awareness campaigns on the safe use of CNG vehicles and periodic inspections were also recommended as critical steps toward minimizing risks.
The debate over CNG vehicles underscores the complex challenges of transitioning to alternative energy sources in Nigeria. While the push for greener transportation is commendable, experts like Elebute stress that safety must remain a top priority to ensure the well-being of citizens and the success of such initiatives.
