Ogun State Partners with SON to Launch CNG Vehicle Conversion Initiative
In a significant move towards eco-friendly transportation, the Ogun State Government has teamed up with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to launch a project aimed at converting petrol and diesel vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) systems. This initiative is part of the state's broader commitment to energy transition and aims to address both economic and environmental challenges by making transportation more affordable and sustainable.
Under this partnership, specialized training sessions will be provided for technicians and stakeholders, including the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) and Vehicle Inspection Officers, to ensure that all CNG conversions are conducted safely and in line with global standards. According to Ogun State's Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, the shift to CNG will not only cut down on fuel costs but also help reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality, directly impacting public health.
The initiative also reinforces the federal government's energy transition agenda, which is promoting alternatives like CNG and electric vehicles across the nation. The Director of Laboratory Services at SON, Mr. David Ikhebome, expressed confidence in Ogun State's leadership on this front, citing the partnership as a model for other states to emulate. By fostering a cleaner transport sector, Ogun State aims to reduce its carbon footprint, ultimately contributing to Nigeria's climate goals.
As this conversion initiative progresses, it opens opportunities for both public and private sectors to invest in Nigeria's CNG infrastructure, possibly leading to further economic growth and job creation. Ogun State's commitment to sustainable mobility not only promotes energy diversity but also positions it as a trailblazer in Nigeria's green transition.
