Port Harcourt Refinery Produces 1.4 Million Litres of PMS Daily, Says NNPCL

The Port Harcourt Refinery has commenced production, delivering 1.4 million liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) daily, according to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). This development marks a significant milestone in reducing Nigeria's reliance on imported fuel and boosting local refining capacity.

The refinery's partial resumption is part of the federal government's broader initiative to revive the nation's moribund refining sector. By producing locally refined petrol, the refinery aims to reduce the strain on foreign exchange reserves spent on fuel imports and stabilize domestic fuel availability.

Despite this achievement, industry experts emphasize the need for sustained investment in Nigeria's refining infrastructure. The Port Harcourt Refinery is currently operating below its installed capacity of 210,000 barrels per day, which underscores the importance of completing ongoing rehabilitation projects. Full-scale operations are expected to contribute significantly to meeting domestic demand.

The current output will also complement other local and modular refineries in addressing Nigeria's energy needs. However, stakeholders stress the importance of transparency in managing refinery operations to ensure consistent production and affordability for end users. Strengthening supply chains and addressing challenges like pipeline vandalism are critical to sustaining this progress.

This milestone reaffirms the potential of Nigeria's energy sector to achieve self-sufficiency in fuel production. If adequately supported, the refining sector can serve as a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, and reduced energy costs for millions of Nigerians.
