Nigeria Not Ready for CNG Cars, Says Lagos-Based Car Dealer

A Lagos-based car dealer has expressed concerns over the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles in Nigeria, stating that the country is not adequately prepared for the transition. The dealer highlighted significant infrastructural and policy gaps that make it challenging for CNG cars to thrive in the Nigerian market. One of the major barriers identified is the lack of CNG refueling infrastructure across the country. With only a few stations available in urban areas, most car owners would struggle to find refueling points, especially in remote regions. Additionally, the high cost of converting petrol-powered vehicles to CNG poses a financial burden for most Nigerians.

The car dealer also pointed out that the regulatory framework for CNG adoption remains unclear. While government initiatives to promote cleaner energy are commendable, they need to be supported by practical policies that encourage investment in CNG infrastructure and technology. Without such measures, CNG adoption may remain limited to a niche market.
Safety concerns were also mentioned, with the dealer emphasizing the need for public education on the safe use and maintenance of CNG vehicles. The perception of CNG cars as being less safe than petrol-powered counterparts could deter potential buyers unless addressed through awareness campaigns and stringent safety standards.
While CNG vehicles offer a promising solution for reducing fuel costs and emissions, the consensus is that Nigeria must first tackle these challenges. By addressing infrastructure, policy, and safety concerns, the country can lay the groundwork for a successful transition to cleaner automotive technologies.
